Now Keel has published his seminal research in a new book, The Coroner’s Silence; Death Records and the Hidden Victims of Police Violence. It’s a startling revelation of how incomplete autopsy reports, mishandled medical records, and strategically lost evidence have long shielded law enforcement from accountability. Join Keel in conversation with expert Alex Vitale as they unpack this systemic concealment of state-sanctioned violence and expose the failures embedded within forensic medicine. Showing of 2nd part of video documentary: Race, Power of an Illusion followed by a panel discussion of faculty. This panel will look historically at the origins of the concept of race in the United States, how it was used by pseudo scientists and the elite to justify enslavement of Africans, and how the country's laws and institutions were designed around race to privilege whites. The video examines the contradictions between the founding of the country as a democracy in which “All men are created equal” and the heavy reliance on the system of slavery and displacement of indigenous Americans to acquire land for white settlers. The panel will look at how ideas of race evolved over the history of the country, and how scientific racism was embraced to justify slavery and the subordination of African Americans, Native Americans and other people of color.

After taping the seminar discussion for episode two of All of the Above, Manuel sat down with Dr. Terence Keel to learn more about his research and his new book, Divine Variations. Dr. Keel is an Associate Professor of History and Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His book Divine Variations traces the roots of modern racial science to Christian intellectual history and ideology. Dr. Keel is an affiliate of the Center for the Study of Racism, Social Justice & Health and was co-editor of a Fall 2017 special issue of the American Journal of Law and Medicine that explored how Critical Race Theory can transform the study of health inequalities across the health sciences. Dr. Keel received his PhD from Harvard University and joined us on episode two of All of the Above to help us examine some of the complexities of race and culture in modern American schooling. Sameer Pandya is an Assistant Professor in UCSB’s Department of Asian American Studies and author of the story collection The Blind Writer, which was long-listed for the PEN/Open Book Award. He is the recipient of the PEN/Civitella Fellowship. Terence Keel is an Associate Professor in the Department of African American Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles and the UCLA Institute for Society & Genetics. He has written widely about American biomedical science, religion, law, and modern thought. The Q&A portion of the event will be moderated by Professor Lisa Sun-Hee Park, Chair of the Department of Asian American Studies.
